Trees for Schools

Keep Omaha Beautiful’s Trees for Schools program is a FREE, STEM-based, multi-week program for Title I Schools. Trees for Schools empowers and inspires students to be stewards of the environment and their community. Through this program, students will explore their urban ecosystem, learn about the benefits of trees, and study the importance of biodiversity through a variety of cross-curricular hands-on activities. The program culminates with students planting native trees on their school’s property.

For more information and to apply, contact Hannah Rennard Ganley at Hannah.Rennard-Ganley@cityofomaha.org or call 402-444-7780.
*Note: KOB works with 1-2 Title I schools each spring and fall, so space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

MORE ABOUT THE PROGRAM

FREE TO SCHOOLS

Trees for Schools is fully funded through Keep Omaha Beautiful (KOB) and is available at no cost to Title I schools. KOB provides tailored educational experiences, supplies and materials, trees, planting plans designed by a landscape architect, and a watering contract for the newly planted trees.

HANDS-ON LEARNING

Students learn about the benefits of a healthy urban tree canopy, the ecosystem services that trees provide, the importance of biodiversity, and can even help select the trees planted on their school grounds.

DESIGNED FOR OMAHA

The Trees for Schools program is crafted to align with Nebraska content standards, OPS’ educational “scope & sequence” guide, and the teacher’s specific curricular objectives.

SCIENTIFIC JOURNALS

KOB staff works with each classroom teacher to develop a tailored scientific journal for the class. In addition to providing guidance and structure to student activities, this journal becomes a portfolio of the students’ work. The STEM-based journals include integrated science, language arts, social studies, math, and art activities.

What Educators Are Saying

“You made this quarter so interactive and engaging for us! You could see it growing every week, and now all the students want to do is talk with everyone about trees! We are going to make a video next week about how to respect and honor our trees, and the kindergarten is writing us a letter about them. This has been such a rewarding experience!” - 4th grade teacher at Pinewood Elementary

“Thank you again for such a great learning opportunity for our students all quarter and a beautiful tree planting activity. I appreciate you showing our kids that they can do great things. Thank you for all of your efforts. Our students will never forget this!” - Principal of Pinewood Elementary
